about

Ten years ago I wrote a song for what was to be a 9/11 memorial event. For any number of reasons, the event shifted during the planning and a few parts, including my song, were cut. No big deal. In cases like that, you just want the event to be what it needs to be.

Fast forward 10 years, and again the message of the song seems appropriate to those who once again step between the bulk of us and the potential harm we face.

I took a short break from my current music project to make a new demo of this song and a companion video to recognize and thank those who are working so hard to get us all through this difficult time!

#staysafe - Thanks!

lyrics

There's a moment of peace, yet his heart skips a beat
when he sees the smoke on the horizon.
And while all's well at home for the moment at least,
she knows somebody out there is crying.
And he and the boys will set out to do all that they can.
You can say what you want, but you can't say they don't give a damn.
You can say what you want, but you can't say they don't give a damn.

She puts courage on fear as she staunches the wound
and hopes nothing else comes through that door.
He's been missing the smiles of the loved ones at home
for a hundred-odd weeks maybe more.
Yet with all that they've seen and with all of the places they've been.
It'd be too hard to say that they'd never go do it again.
It'd be too hard to say that they'd never go through it again.

Why does she care if a stranger has shelter, or the lost be found?
Why does he answer a coll in the darkness, when he's safe and sound?

And when finally home and it's quiet again and he's rubbing the day from his eyes.
She can once again turn to the matters at hand, but she keeps an eye out on the sky.
For there's no time to dwell on the deeds that were done yesterday.
And how better a world thanks to those who step into harm's way.
How better a world thanks to those who step into harm's way.
